Ground-breaking oil bill gets backing from Brazil Congress

theoilandgasworld

A landmark oil bill that designates all royalties from newly discovered oil fields to education and healthcare has been approved by Brazil’s Congress. The bill was passed by the Brazilian lower house on Wednesday; it had already been approved by the Senate. Once signed by the president, the bill will come into effect next year.

The move to channel oil money to public services is one of several reform proposed by Dilma Rousseff, Brazil’s president, as a response to the widespread protests and riots June. The demonstrations, which were held across Brazil, were sparked by a rise in transport costs, though they quickly encompassed other issues, including the cost of staging the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and corruption in the higher echelons of Brazilian politics and industry. The protests often ended in fighting between police and protestors.

According to the BBC, the unrest prompted President Rousseff to present…

NT government removing obstacles for the gas mining companies

FRED LEFTWICH - ABORIGINAL ADVOCATE, CANBERRA AUSTRALIA

Another example of the northern territory government making way for further gas mining on aboriginal land. Two land management committees are being combined into one committee which I would think increase their workload. It’s an old trip that governments play, send committee members out to manage one catchment area while the government sells off the other catchment area to a gas mining company. When the general community complains the government will say they had the support of the catchment committee, whose members would have probably resigned by then.

First mining company fined for damaging aboriginal scared site

FRED LEFTWICH - ABORIGINAL ADVOCATE, CANBERRA AUSTRALIA

A mining company in the northern territory has been fined by a court for damaging an aboriginal scared site. This is the very first time a mining company has been fined. It sets a fantastic precedent to help aboriginal communities throughout Australia protect their psychical cultural property against the wave of gas mining that will flood Australian for probably the next 100 years. The gas industry has come out and said that there is enough gas in the ground to power a city of 1 million people for 16,000 years. Aboriginal communities are suffering the brunt of this wave of mining as well as the pastoral community throughout Queensland. Hopefully, the courts might help aboriginal communities to stop that assault on their traditions not only from miners but also from reckless governments.

Miner pays government and not aboriginal community for damaging scared site

FRED LEFTWICH - ABORIGINAL ADVOCATE, CANBERRA AUSTRALIA

http://www.abc.net.au/pm/content/2013/s3817223.htm?site=indigenous&topic=latest

This has to be the most strange arrangements for the protection of aboriginal scared sites. The government body that has been established to protect aboriginal sites, the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority, fined a mining company for damaging an aboriginal scared site. However, instead of the mining company paying restitution to the aboriginal community they pay the northern territory government. Maybe the government will compensate the aboriginal community but will they compensate them the full amount? This is just another case of why we need a treaty so aboriginal people can legally protect their rights and not have governments, who have many conflict of interests, speak on their behalf. With Australian governments trying to clear the deck for gas mining companies to starting fracking every acre of land in Australia, I wouldn’t be surprised if they started to attack the Aboriginal Areas Protection Authority or get rid of it. Stayed tuned.

In the markets… Oil futures update

theoilandgasworld

Oil futures lost ground this week after a smaller-than-anticipated drawdown in weekly crude stocks. A closely watched report showed a decline in crude inventories, but also revealed that fuel stocks rose counter to earlier expectations.

Gasoline futures fell to their lowest level in a month following the unexpected rise in stockpiles, extending a recent slide that could signal lower prices at the pump in the coming weeks.

Crude oil for September delivery retreated 93 cents, or 0.9%, to settle at $104.37 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The contract had shown a small gain on Wednesday morning just before the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that crude supplies decreased by 1.3 million barrels for the week ended 2 August to 363.3 million barrels.

Analysts surveyed by Platts had expected a drop of 2 million barrels.

• Shell resumes Bonny Light production

Nigeria’s crude Oil export, excluding condensates will hit 1.94 million barrels per day by September, as Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) joint venture plans to ship four cargoes of Bonny Light grade to the international market.
The country’s current export is about 1.84million barrels per day, down 140,000 barrels per day from the 1.96million barrels per day allocation given by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) as the country’s export quota.
However, the country currently ships about 2.6million barrels of crude oil and condensates to the export market as condensates are said to be excluded from OPEC quota.
The 1.94million barrels per day target by September is still 20,000 barrels per day below the country’s OPEC quota.

A shipping list obtained by Reuters showed that Nigeria will export four cargoes of Bonny Light crude oil in September to boost the country’s monthly exports…

South Korea is saving oil, are you?

Cooperative Development Solutions

I love this idea from S Oil in South Korea. By identifying a big problem (oil over-consumption related to an increasing number of cars on the road and a relatively small number of available parking spaces) and innovating to help find a rather simple, yet ingenious solution, S Oil is working to save oil in the country by using balloons to mark open parking spaces. What other simple solutions might be out there that we haven’t tried yet? Check out the youtube video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw9g9OVHdJI#at=136
